Our Earth

ABOUT OUR EARTH :
Earth, our home, is the third planet from the sun. It's the only planet that has an atmosphere containing free oxygen, oceans of water on its surface, and, of course, life. Earth is known to be formed 4.5 Billion years ago. Earth is the fifth-largest planet in our solar system. It's smaller than the four gas planets -Jupiter, Saturn, Uranus, and Neptune, but it is larger than the three other rocky planets- Mercury, Mars, and Venus. The Earth is 71% covered with water and 29% covered with land. Earth has a diameter of roughly 8,000 miles.
While Earth orbits the sun, the planet is continuously spinning on an imaginary line called 'axis' that runs from the North Pole to the South Pole. It takes Earth 24 hours to complete a rotation on its axis and 365 days to complete an orbit around the sun. Earth's orbit is not a perfect circle, and more like an oval-shaped ellipse, similar to the orbits of all the other planets. Our planet is a bit closer to the sun in early January and farther away in July.

Earth's atmosphere is 78% nitrogen, 21% oxygen, 0.9% argon, and 0.03% carbon dioxide with very small percentages of other elements. Our atmosphere also contains water vapor. In addition, Earth's atmosphere contains traces of dust particles, pollen, plant grains, and other solid particles. There are 5 main layers of the earth's atmosphere, they are Troposphere, Stratosphere, Mesosphere, Thermosphere, and Exosphere.
